Kitten Kast # 218

Kitten Kast # 218 (right click, save as)

Here's an introduction to the music of GG Allin. Featured here are a few different backing bands including Bulge, Murder Junkies, The Criminal Quartet and The Scumfucs. Very NSFW and if any of the content offends you, well, GG intended it to. He was a much cleverer man than he would've had you believe. He took the self-styled outlaw personas of David Allen Coe and Hank Williams, and the shock rock antics of Alice Cooper and Kiss to their logical conclusion. Included here, also, are a few of his country tunes. Straight up Outlaw Country that rocks pretty hard. Most of these songs sound like shit (no pun intended), but that's part of their appeal. They sound dangerous. I can honestly say I'm very glad I never got a chance to see him live, but the energy and bile that these recordings communicate provide the same kind of excitement (albeit with far less risk of taking a mic to the nose or a handful of shit to face).

It's Hank Williams' 90th birthday next Tuesday, although he only made it to 29. He died on New Year's Eve 1953 in the back of a Cadillac, surrounded by beer cans and unfinished lyrics, en route to a show in Charleston, West Virginia. I've been obsessed with him since I first heard Long Gone Lonesome Blues about 5 years ago. His voice is so sad. He wrote some of the bleakest music I've ever heard. He sang about lost love, hard living and redemption. I'll shut up now so you can sit back and listen to Hank. Enjoy.

Kitten Kast # 200

Kitten Kast # 200 (right click, save as)

That's right. It's Kitten Kast # 200. Who'd have thought we'd have still been going this far on? I wanted to do something special as it's a bit of a landmark number so I asked a very special guest to sit in on the wheels of steel this week. He's the totally awesome singer, guitarist and driving force behind the mighty Buzzov-en, Kirk Fisher. Yes, the very Reverend Dirtkicker himself. Take it away, Kirk:

Black Sabbath - End of The Beginning
Yeah, that's right the new Sabbath record. I personally think the record is really good and I have it on Endless loop in my car stereo. This song is the catchiest and I'll say this, it does have an Ozzy solo flavor to it too, but i think it's a really strong song. Love Ozzy's vocals, and the breakdown early in the song reminds me a little of "Hand Of Doom". I feel this album is probably my favorite thing released this year. I don't buy a lot of new stuff though, so hey.....I stick with the bands that have got me through from the beginning. Sabbath is definitely in the top 5 bands for me.

Everlast - Lonely Road
Yeah, I'm actually a pretty big fan of Everlast's solo stuff. The rap tracks I'm not that fond of, but most all of his guitar driven bluesy songs are really great tunes. Simple structure and just solid chorus. "Lonely Road" is a good one that I feel kind of describes my path in life. Although I realize its been by my own doing I've led a pretty lonely existence even when surrounded by friends and people when I was on the road with Buzzoven. Even though I was a focus of attention a lot of times I always had a lonely feeling inside. This song has a lot of heart which I think Everlast puts into his music well.

Jamey Johnson - Heaven Bound
I got into Jamey Johnson in the last, like, 3-4 years. He is definitely one of the best singer/songwriters on the country scene that still gets accepted by mainstream country. This song is a bit sappy I'm sure to many, but I love its honesty and description of holding someone's hand and feeling like they were forgiven of everything when they did that simple act. It definitely spoke to me when I was getting clean. It makes me think of my current girlfriend and just, ya know, that as I grow older and I'm trying to live more positively, that I'm eventually gonna go to Heaven, which I do believe in personally. Jamey's songs are just really powerful. Emotional and powerful in the way they can paint a picture. I just really dig listening to his double album "Guitar Song" and "The High Cost Of Living". I may have the titles wrong but all of his songs are good.

Black Flag - My War
Oh yeah. By far my favorite record of all the Black Flag releases. This was one of two records that I first bought when I was 13 and in Catholic grade school in Southern Florida. The other was Circle Jerks' "Group Sex". Also a great album. Anyway, those two records changed my life. I was fresh into skating ramps etc....and Black Flag was always my first choice to shred a ramp too. My War is such a great song describing that inner hate and angst and feeling that really no one was my friend. Me against the fucking world. I saw B.Flag on the end of the My War tour in Tampa Fl. at The Cuban Club. Saw them again a short time after on The Loose Nut tour. Both times were like spiritual experiences for me. 4 people who all looked so different and put together you never could have imagined the sonic burst that came out of the P.A. Awesome to say the least.

Mad Season - River of Deceit
I was so into Alice in Chains. When Mad Season's album hit the shelves I was stoked. This album is in my top 5 of all time. It's a really deep introspective record. If you're a drug addict or struggled with depression etc.....you can relate to Layne's lyrics on this record. "My pain is self chosen", such a strong and truthful statement. I'm pretty sure these 4 guys had each recently gone to rehab, possibly together? Not exactly sure but do know it was at a time when Layne was trying to stay clean. Great song.

Johnny Cash - I See A Darkness
Originally written and performed by Bonnie Prince Billy. He sings backup on Johnny's version. This song just makes me think of bonds I have with only a few select people, whom I've grown to love and feel like their my brothers. Most all of them have had something to do with Buzzoven at some time. I really dig all the American Recordings albums Johnny did with Rubin producing. This is one of my favorite tunes on these. "Thirteen", written by Danzig, is another great though.

Johnny Cash - Thirteen
Story of my life. Well used to be a lot more. Still some in present day though too.

Mark Lanegan - Strange Religion
Really dig a whole bunch of Mark's solo work. I'm not fond of Screaming Trees too much, but "Bubblegum" and "Whiskey for the Holy Ghost" are both kick ass records. He has such a strong deep voice. I'd kill to be able to sing that good.

Social Distortion - When The Angels Sing
Besides loving early Social D. I think "White Light..............White Trash" is a pretty solid record. I think it's amazing how Mike Ness, and Ozzy and Tony Iommi as well as many others, are still rocking out and writing such great music at such older ages. It's inspiring. Just always thought this song was good and I've always been into Angels.

Bl'ast - Tomorrow
Well I just downloaded this yesterday and pre ordered their lost recordings L.P. "Blood" and, besides the recent Sabbath release, it's one of the few things I'm highly excited about. I loved all of Blast's records and they were another band that I skated to and listened to often, especially in my earlier days. It would be great to see them regroup in some way for some shows. It's a new song to me but definitely is solid. Go check em out if you never have.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Junkie
One of my favorite Skynyrd tunes. Only available on their box set.

Kitten Kast # 192

Kitten Kast # 192 (right click, save as)

A selection of songs from people I either know or have met.

Eels - Tremendous Dynamite
I met E after a gig at The Coal Exchange in Cardiff in '98 or '99. He came out and played I Can't Help Falling In Love With You on the piano for everyone that had waited round after the show. He was a really nice guy and chatted to us for a while.

Mark Lanegan - Driving Death Valley
He played TJ's in Newport on a solo tour sometime in the early 2000s and I got him to sign my Sub Pop 200 CD. Another nice dude.

Meat Puppets - Comin' Down
Met Cris and Curt a few weeks ago when they played The Fleece in Bristol. Curt was cool, but quiet. Totally unimpressed by fan boys telling him he's an awesome guitarist. Cris was much more talkative and told me about him and Curt going to see Emerson, Lake & Palmer on LSD. Apparently the crowd morphed into a giant scarab beetle and lurched at the stage every time a pyro went off.

Stone Temple Pilots - Meat Plow
I met Scott after a show at Rock City in Nottingham in the late 90s. He was a super nice guy. Gave me a big hug and signed my Core CD. We talked about our favourite frontmen and he told me he'd been watching Queen at Wembley 86 while he was in the gym, and he stole loads of his schtick from Freddie Mercury.

Desecration - Raping The Corpse
Andi, the bassist, is a good friend of mine. I first met him when his old band, Mulch, were playing in Newport. He's now engaged to one of my best friends. Desecration are what I call a proper band. They tour all over the world and have a fan base and stuff.

The Keep - Seasoned Scythe
The Keep are basically this dude called Hywel who I know from when we were both mini moshers in the 90s. In Newport there's the ruins of an old castle and our little group of friends used to hang out there on Saturdays. Good times. Also we both post on South Wales Massive. Also also our drummer Chris and his old bandmate from Taint, Jimbob, sing on this track. It's good.

Jerry Cantrell - Psychotic Break
Jerry played TJ's on the Degradation Trip tour before AIC reformed. He'd gone from playing arenas with Alice to playing to a 3/4 full rock club in Newport and wasn't in the best of moods. I had a very quick conversation with him. Halfway through he grabbed my arm and said something like, "listen, kid. i gotta go do my shit. I'll catch you later and sign your stuff". He disappeared inside his bus immediately after the set and showed no sign of coming out. Luckily his guitarist had taken a shine to my friend and she "persuaded" him to go on the bus and get Jerry to sign my CDs. Apparently he had to wake him up and he was pretty pissed off.

Manic Street Preachers - ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart
I went to the same school as the Manics and used to see all of them walking around where I grew up. Everyone in the valleys has a Manics story. I talked to Nicky a bunch of times and he was always really nice.

Thrones - Wage War
I've met Joe twice. Once at a gig in Camden in about 2003 and once when he supported Isis in Cardiff. Also a really good dude. Happy to shake your hand and sign your shit.

Pus - The Black Swordsman
All these dudes are good friends. Al and Rob from Spider Kitten play in Pus and Rhys, the singer, did a bunch of awesome artwork for us including the Future Echos cover. Solid bros. I produced this album for them.

Smiler - Deadbeat...Get A Job!
The drummer Mikee is ex of Spider Kitten and a good friend. We used to do sound teching together. Also the guitarist, Ioan, directed our video for Twin Obscenities. They were a great band and I'm stoaked to have produced the one album they released.

Weedeater - Dirt Merchant
They played Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff and I met Dixie briefly before they went on. He's a loon, but he's a nice guy. Afterwards I was having a toke outside and Shep and Keko came out to blag some. I had a hipflask of Jim Beam I'd been sipping from throughout the night that was still over half full. I offered some to Keko and he drained it in one, handed back and said "thanks, man."

Bismuth - The Eternal Marshes (excerpt)
I first met Tanya of Bismuth when she was in Diet Pills. I put them on in this tiny upstairs gig in a pub in Cardiff and they crashed at my house afterwards. We had a smoke listened to Jethro Tull and drank some wine. That's all I remember. They were all still going strong when I threw in the towel at 4am. Super nice lady who knows her amps.

Jimmy Rowe - Take It Easy On Me, Baby
Jimmy was in a band called SPG with our bass player Al. He's one of the most talented guys I know and a good friend. I have a deal with him where I'll record him for free whenever he wants, just so I can have more of his music to listen to. This was recorded in my living room whilst heavily fortified at some ungodly hour of the morning. Another solid bro.

Kitten Kast # 186

Kitten Kast # 186 (right click, save as)

Hey kids, here's a selection of Spider Kitten tunes from about 2005 onwards. It's not meant to be a best of or anything like that, just a selection. A taster of our back catalogue, if you will. It's almost impossible to represent even an album with a few songs, let alone the whole band, as we tend to mix it up a bit where style is concerned. If you like any of the stuff you hear then there's probably other stuff in our back catalogue that sounds like it. If you hate it all then there's probably very different stuff you'll also hate lurking there. As ever, share it round amongst your friends/enemies and spread the word. We're about to start recording a brand new album that will probably be out at the end of the year. It's exciting, and doesn't really sound that much like anything on this mix, but we hope you'll listen to it anyway. Thanks for caring
Chi

Burdened
This is off our most recent album, Cougar Club. It's the only tune on this mix to feature Chris West on drums. We'd recorded this song before in 2009 with a drum machine and when Chris joined it seemed a good one to start him off on. We liked the new version so much we rerecorded it and put it on Cougar Club. Me and Oram play all the rhythm guitars and Rob does the solos. It features a Judy Garland sample. True story.

Right Back At You
This is from the Dead Beat EP from 2007. We knocked it up in about 2 days including mixing.

Danger
This is from Future Echos, from 2008. It's supposed to be an attempt at Hard Rock or something. If I remember rightly, our friend Rmz programmed the drums for this. Al does a great bass part in the middle.

Safety
Also from Future Echos, it came straight after Danger on the album. This is Twan on guitar and me singing. We recorded this while he was tripping. He didn't drop acid in order to maximise his creativity or anything, I just needed him to record his part and he happened to be tripping. It's kind of Cohenesque. I like it.

Pray It All Goes Away
This is from the Rats From A Sinking Ship EP from 2009. Twan left the band and moved to Bristol and it seemed like the end of SK was nigh. I was in a real bad place mentally and everything was turning to shit. I still find it hard to listen to this. It's mostly about panic attacks and agoraphobia. Cheery.

Spitting Misery Through Black Teeth
From our first physical release, Ineffable from 2005. We recorded this entire album in the living room of the flat I shared with ptew. It was filthy and crammed with equipment, cats, overflowing ashtrays and empty takeaway cartons. Al joined the band the day before we recorded his parts. He'd been on tour with No Fit State Circus, playing in the house band and was pretty fried. He listened to each song a few times and then played each part first take. ptew programmed the drums and they're awesome. A really strange beat.

Localized Loss Of Ambition
Dumb Shit.

Lounge Act
I'm a huge Nirvana fan. They were the first band I got into that made me want to start a band. I was already really into Pink Floyd, but I never thought for a minute I could ever play anything like that myself. Nirvana seemed achievable. We did two virtual 7"s of Nirvana covers, one with two tracks from Nevermind, called Driven Men, and one with two tracks from In Utero, called Routine. Anagrams, bitches.

Time Takes Its Toll
Also from Cougar Club. We needed an acoustic tune so I recorded this by myself in my front room. It's pretty sad actually. Features a Bukowski sample.

Sorefoot Blues
A B side from the original release of Burdened. I think it's half a Robert Johnson song. We should do more blues. We were a three piece by this time. I did the backwards solo. I don't think ptew is on this.

This Pointless Exercise
Another from the Rats...EP. I think it's about how I felt about the band at the time. I pretty much thought this was gonna be the last thing we ever put out. But (un)luckily we just plodded on and kept churning the shit out. Al programmed the drums. Actually, we totally wrote this whole thing as we were recording it. Drums first, then bass, then guitar, then vocals.

Brother
Blasphemy really, I know. Al plays all the guitars on this including the solo.

Bilirubin Blues
Another one from Future Echos. Kind of a macho Hard Rock thing going on here. I'm not sure what we were thinking. It's pretty silly, but not without its charm.

Semi Auto Construct
The line up for this one is Oram on guitars, Al on bass and me on vocals and bongos. We had a super chill recording session with Oram and this reworking of a really heavy tune off Future Echos was one of the results. Super stoned 70s vibez.

Paper Cuts
Another Nirvana cover. If you ever thought the Fecal Matter demo was a bit too nice sounding, then this is the tune for you. I used a horrible early 80s Westone guitar and it made the most disgusting feedback. The recording doesn't really do justice to how fucking nasty this thing sounded. Anyway, I like this. All music should sound like this.

Moanin' The Blues
From our Christmas EP, To Let The Winter In. I always think throwing in a Hank Williams cover shows real class. That's what we're doing here: showing some class. I love Swans and Nick Cave and Cohen and so I really enjoy doing this kind of stuff. Fun Fact: I smoked a huge cigar as I was recording the vocals because it helped me get the dryness I wanted in my voice and also because I like huge cigars.

Ineffable
The last track on the album of the same name. Twan plays a Gu Qin at the beginning. It's cool. At the end of the track you can hear what suburban Cardiff sounds like at 2pm in the summer. Al's bassline makes this song. If there's a clever melody going on it's usually him doing it. The song is about the rapture, either that or overdosing in a squat.

I decided to put my collection of vinyl to good use, so I made a kast consisting entirely of vinyl rips. It was all run from my turntable through my valve system (kt88s for all you geeks). How hipster is that? The file is a little larger than normal because it's encoded at a higher bit rate, y'know, so you can hear all the crackles and pops properly.

David Allan Coe is probably my favourite country singer. I doubt I'd want to hang out with the guy, but he sure has a great voice. Now, over the next 50-odd minutes you're going to hear some big boy words and some less than politically correct sentiments. Just remember that most of these songs were written in the 1970s, in Texas. A little context goes a long way.
